The Final Goodbye

This is the Entry for Romantic Friday Writer -Greener Pastures

"Beep...beep...beep...beep.." A sudden ring from my cell phone brought me back to my senses. She was calling I missed the call, Ding -Dong and now the door bell rang.

Was that a dream? I got out of the bed , I tried hard to think in my current state of trance. Opened my eyes and had a glimpse of her beautiful face from the door glass, passionately staring at me. She was looking at me in amazement and still looking cute as ever , I ensured myself of my return from a different world. She stood still at the main door as I kept walking towards it to open it.From the door glass I could see she was wearing the long white dress she bought from Singapore during our last vacations.

I opened the door "Can I have the papers?", she asked in a firm voice.

Yes , we were getting divorced , It all started because we could not communicate , yes we could not after I went to Delhi for my new job .She wont understand the pressure at work , I know I  became tense and anxious most of the time.I was always busy planning things for the betterment of our status in the society . She would lie awake in bed thinking about me and I was always busy thinking about the schedule for the days ahead-the calls I would have to make for the project I  was currently working on.I was always thinking of the plans I would have to make about paying the mounting bills. The constant pressure of  many responsibilities weighed heavily on me.

Due to lack of sleep, I guess I  became irritable and short-tempered. She didn’t enjoy her life much anymore with me I guess , We began fighting about our relationship.Once out of my own frustration I  told her that  she was not helping enough around the house. But the reality was she left her job just because we were moving in Delhi for my new job.I guess That was the final nail in the coffin.

I still remember everything from Holding hands under a starry sky, cuddling in the bed , sitting in front of a burning log fire, kissing on her favorite spot at the corner of the lips , walking arm in arm bare foot on a sandy beach, having the bubble bath , kicking leaves on an autumnal day through the woods, sharing a romantic candle lit dinner , eyes meeting across a crowded room , wanting her to be with me , sitting together watching a sunset head on shoulders , feeding each other grapes, chocolate dipped strawberries, sharing a dessert,.

Now , I had no feeling to express; no other gesture to show than giving her a big and long hug and final goodbye. She collected the divorce papers and drove off the car in the car I gifted her three years ago on her birthday.

  6. That paragraph where he "remembers everything" about their time together is awesomely romantic. Stunning, sexy. And I loved the last line, especially how you left it hanging; the way life seems to have left him hanging, waiting for the next thing.

You captured the theme sentiment well Rahul.

  7. A new job and a new move makes a relationship difficult to sustain and you captured those emotions perfectly. I love the way he gives her a long hug which means there is room for friendship at a later date.

  8. Hi Rahul.

Thanks for joining and submitting an entry to RFW.

I found this incredibly sad and moving. He sounds like such a nice person, yet the reasons for the divorce are not clear. At the end I could see her driving off to 'Greener Pastures'. That second-last paragraph is so cool - romantic! Well done.

It's sad when things don't work out. Your story had a lovely romantic feel to it - with a tinge of sadness. Perhaps he would find love again.

  12. Rahul, welcome to RFW. You've certainly capture the theme well here with your sad yet romantic narrative. It's always interesting to read stories written in a male POV and you've done that well here. I look forward to reading more from you.

  15. This is so sad. I could feel his (your?) pain reflecting on the good times past. Those are real issues that every relationship struggles with. Very believable.

  17. Sad, but I'm almost always saddened by divorce, even when it was meant to be. There's something about sticking with it, through thick and thin for me. I'm also stubborn as all get out. :)

    I enjoyed your RFW entry!
